Waste Depots and Transfer Stations

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has imposed strict conditions on the disposal of waste in South Australia. The Hawker Waste Depot will continue to operate in the short term as a landfill under a Landfill Environmental Management Plan (LEMP) The Quorn Waste Transfer Station transports all waste in bulk off-site to a certified waste management recycling facility.

Council highlighted back in its 2009/10 and 2010/11 Annual Business Plans that all Council waste services will be financed by a user pays system of fees. Council approved as part of the current Annual Business Plan and Budget a schedule of fees for both the Hawker and Quorn Waste Depots. Waste Depot Fees can be found in the Fees and Charges list.

Quorn Transfer Station

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL WASTE STREAMS MUST BE SEPARATED BEFORE ARRIVAL AT TRANSFER STATION.

The Quorn Transfer Station commenced operation on the 2nd August 2011. The ability to land fill at Quorn waste depot has ceased and Council's EPA Licence #312 reflects this. The transfer station structure contains 3 large bins which will be signed, to which waste goes in what bin. The depot operator will assist you in identifying this. The separate areas for timber, green waste, construction and demolition and steel will remain on the ground as is the situation currently. A separate container for e-waste is also available. Asbestos from residents only is still accepted at the Quorn Transfer Station provided strict EPA guidelines are adhered to and prior approval has been given.

Local Recycling Businesses

Hawker Recyclers (Ph: 8648 4041 Mb: 0423 657 273) receive cans, bottles and drink cartons with 10 cent deposit. Quorn Recycling (Ph: 0488 538 143) also receive cans, bottles and drink cartons with 10 cent deposit. Please consider contacting these businesses as they should be supported. Anything you deliver to the waste depots is a cost to you.

Waste Must Be Sorted

It is important to remember the waste you bring to either the Hawker waste depot or Quorn transfer station must be sorted, as penalties will be placed on Council for contaminated waste. The depot operator has the right to refuse any waste not sorted.  Waste will only be received from the Council district, and the depot operator may ask for proof of residence.

E-waste is accepted and must be sorted separately from other waste streams and placed in the e-waste container.

Free Dumping Vouchers

All ratepayers including out of town residents can collect water marked vouchers when they pay their first quarter rates instalment, which contain 6 free green waste vouchers and 2 hard waste vouchers. The vouchers last for approx 12 months and can be used at any time during the year from the 1 August until 30 September the following year, in normal depot operating hours. The voucher is for a day and can be used multiple times that day whilst the depot is open.  However it is restricted to trailers no larger than tandem size.  No farm equipment or building and renovation material accepted.  The restrictions of use and Hawker and Quorn waste depot operating hours are on the back of the vouchers for ease of reference. Vouchers are not to be used for construction works.

Hard Waste Pick Up

The hard waste town pick will be restricted to the elderly, disabled and self funded retirees who are unable to attend the waste depots, and these persons will be required to use their hard waste voucher for the pre arranged pick up day.

The Hawker waste depot will continue to operate as a landfill with the current restrictions and operating hours. Details of Quorn transfer station hours of operation, charges and materials accepted and not accepted were included in a special newsletter for your information and in the Waste Management Information Leaflet.

Mulch

The Flinders Ranges Council will allow residents to collect mulch from the Quorn Transfer Station (subject to availability) free of charge. However, a Mulch Disclaimer Form must be completed prior to collection of mulch.

The organic material available at this waste depot does not meet industry standards for a saleable mulch product and is therefore available at no cost.

The organic material may contain - plant seed, weed seed, sharp and splintery objects, dusts and pathogens.

Material must be self loaded and for safety in handling this material it is recommended that the following precautions be taken:

  • Adequate protective clothing be worn; overalls or long trousers and long sleeved shirt
  • Boots and gloves be worn
  • Eye protection, goggles or safety glasses be worn
  • Dust mask or respirator be worn.

All material is taken at the customers own risk.
