The Flinders Ranges Council is located approx. 335 kms, (3 hours 45 minutes) north of Adelaide. The region is known for its outstanding aesthetic beauty and diverse landscapes ranging from rural scenery to peaks, ridges, and gorges to outback plains.

The Flinders Ranges Council covers an area of 4,198 square kms extending across the main townships of Quorn, Craddock and Hawker.

The Director of Works will inspire a multi-skilled team, ensuring the effective management and delivery of infrastructure, services and projects to benefit the community, visitors and Council.

Reporting to a driven, visionary, community led and sustainability focussed CEO, the scope of this challenging role includes:

  • Preparation of strategic, asset management and annual plans and programs
  • Planning, prioritising, co-ordinating, allocating resources to manage the construction and maintenance of infrastructure ensuring, efficient and cost effective delivery of services
  • Controlling the goods and services purchasing function relating to construction and maintenance works
  • Planning, prioritising, co-ordinating, allocating resources to manage the asset management system for Council properties, roads and footpaths
  • Ensure compliance with all WHS legislation, regulations and instructions, codes of practice, including protective clothing requirements.

Local government experience, managing outdoor work crews, unsealed roads, project/contract management knowledge in remote/rural location/s will be highly desirable.

As a resilient and agile leader, you have the ability to pivot between strategic and hands on as required.

Experience in change management with proven ability to effectively manage a workforce with a focus on performance, building capability, and fostering a positive work environment will be essential.

Prior experience working in remote, rural/regional areas and a willingness to relocate close by is important.

Multi Skilled Operator

(Primarily Grader Operations)

Council invites applications for the above position currently available within The Flinders Ranges Council Works Department, based out of the Hawker Works Depot.

The position is a full-time permanent position working a nine (9) day fortnight. A current HC driver’s license is considered essential for the role. (Persons holding a lower classification license will be considered where they are prepared to obtain the HC license prior to commencement).

Conditions of employment for the position will be in accordance with the Local Government Employees Award and The Flinders Ranges Council Enterprise Agreement No. 11 – 2022. The position has been classified as Grade 7 with an hourly rate of between $33.5276 and $34.2608 (depending on skills, qualifications and experience).

The position reports to the Leading Hand – Works and the Team Leader – Operations.

The position may involve work on weekends, public holidays and at times outside of normal business hours.

Job Description - Multi Skilled Operator

Grants & Project Support Officer

Council invites applications for a Grants and Project Support Officer which is currently available within The Flinders Ranges Council Administration Department.

This position suits a self-motivated, team orientated, friendly and flexible person with strong communication, writing and administrative skills. Persons with a passion for the community and experience in projects and grant writing are strongly encouraged to apply.

The position is a permanent position based in Quorn at the Council Administration Office. Conditions of employment in accordance with the intent of the Municipal Officers (SA) Award 1998, with a salary classification of General Officer Level 3 or 4 subject to relevant qualifications, skills and experience with an indicative annual wage range of between $71,000 - $80,000.

The position reports to the Manager of Governance and Tourism.

The position may involve work on weekends, public holidays and at times outside of normal business hours.

Position Description - Grants and Project Support Officer

Audit & Risk Committee
Independent Chairperson

** Please note that this is not an employee position or role *****

The Flinders Ranges Council is seeking the services of an Independent Presiding Member (Chairperson) for its Audit & Risk Committee that operates in accordance with Section 126 of the Local Government Act 1999.

The overarching purpose of the Committee is to provide independent assurance and advice to Council on accounting and audit, financial management and reporting, internal control and assurance, risk management and governance matters.

The Independent Chairperson plays a pivotal role in the overall effectiveness of the Committee.

Applicants must be individuals, rather than corporations, and have recent experience relevant to the purpose and functions of the Committee. Interested candidates should possess skills, qualifications and experience in these areas. Persons who live in or have a strong familiarity with the region are encouraged to apply. Whilst not mandatory, preference will be given to candidates who possess a sound knowledge of the operations of Local Government.

Given the nature and importance of the role of the Independent Chairperson, interested candidates should also possess:

  • the ability to preside efficiently, firmly and fairly and to facilitate meetings effectively;
  • experience in chairing meetings in Local Government and have an understanding of the prescribed meeting procedures; and
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to promote effective working relationships with Committee members, management, auditors and others.

The Committee will meet on a quarterly basis and the Independent Chair is entitled to a fee for meeting preparation and attendances, either in person or via electronic means. Appointment will be made by Council for a term concluding in November 2028.
