Pichi Richi Marathon Named South Australian Winner at Australian Event Awards

The 43rd Mindfull Aus Pichi Richi Marathon has been officially announced as the South Australian Winner for Best Small Regional Event at the prestigious Australian Event Awards 2025.

This recognition places the marathon among Australia’s most outstanding regional events, celebrating its continued growth, strong community involvement, and contribution to local tourism and economic development.

The award follows the successful 43rd annual event held on 29 June 2025, which saw 272 competitors cross the new finish line in the heart of Quorn. The move to the Quorn CBD has revitalised the event, drawing larger crowds, enhancing the spectator experience, and linking the marathon with other local attractions and businesses.

The Flinders Ranges Council Mayor, Ken Anderson, expressed pride in the achievement,  “This is a great win and a huge honour for our region. It recognises the incredible effort that goes into organising the Pichi Richi Marathon each year, from Council staff to the many volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to make it all possible.”

Mayor Anderson extended heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the event’s success,  “Our volunteers are the heart of the marathon, from the Port Augusta Lions Club, Mission Australia, and Parkrun teams, to local community members who brave the elements at the water stations. Their enthusiasm and commitment help make this event something truly special for Quorn and the wider Flinders Ranges.”

The Australian Event Awards celebrate the best events across the nation, acknowledging innovation, community impact, and excellence in event delivery. The judges commended the committee on the decision to relocate the finish line to the CBD stating that it was an “inspired move that increased spectator engagement, brought the event and its cause into the spotlight and delivered significant benefits to local businesses”.

“We’re thrilled to be recognised at this level,” Mayor Anderson added. “The Pichi Richi Marathon continues to grow each year, and this award reinforces our commitment to developing it as a signature regional event that showcases our beautiful area and supports our local economy.”
