SUNDAY TOO FAR AWAY RETURNS TO QUORN SILOS FOR 50TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENINGS
Iconic Australian Film to Be Projected Each Saturday Night in September 2025
The Flinders Ranges Council is proud to announce a special month-long celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the landmark Australian film Sunday Too Far Away, with screenings to be held every Saturday night throughout September on the Quorn Silos.
Filmed in and around Quorn in September 1975, Sunday Too Far Away holds a special place in the hearts of the local community and in the broader story of Australian cinema. The film, starring Jack Thompson in one of his breakout roles, tells the story of a hard-drinking but fiercely dedicated shearer who leads his fellow workers into a strike against wealthy landowners.
Mayor Ken Anderson, who attended a commemorative anniversary event with the South Australian Film Corporation Lead Actor Jack Thompson and Director Matt Carrol earlier this year in Adelaide, emphasised the cultural significance of the film.
“Sunday Too Far Away is a cornerstone of Australian storytelling – raw, real, and resonant. It helped put Quorn on the cinematic map and showcased the harsh beauty of the Flinders Ranges to the world. It’s fitting that, 50 years on, we honour its legacy right here where it began.”
The film’s original production, under the banner of the South Australian Film Corporation, helped launch the careers of many now-recognised figures in the industry and marked a turning point in Australian filmmaking.
The dramatic backdrop of Quorn and the surrounding Flinders Ranges offered an authentic setting, even as the original shoot was famously interrupted by rain, a stark contrast to this year, which marks the third consecutive year of drought in the region.
The 50th anniversary screenings will take place each Saturday night in September 2025, with the film projected onto the town’s iconic silos resulting in a celebration of both the town’s past and its ongoing cultural vibrancy.
Locals and visitors alike are invited to join in this unique cinematic tribute, under the stars, where the story first came to life. Everyone is encouraged to bring along chairs or picnic rugs and food and drinks on one of the screening nights and enjoy this free event. The movie will screen from approximately 7.10pm.
